Region 8 Expanded Learning Leadership Meeting

2nd Dual Language Immersion Institute - From Speech to Print

True Biliteracy requires more than just exposure; it requires intentional engineering of language opportunities. This session focuses on the "how" of integrating oracy into your daily literacy instruction. We will dissect the relationship between speaking and writing, examining how structured oral practice acts as a rehearsal for academic writing. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with peers to draft specific language structures—including vocabulary strategies, syntax scaffolds, and discourse collaborative structures—that elevate student output from simple sentences to complex academic arguments.

Participants will:

  • analyze the connection between speaking and writing
  • engage in strategies to structure oral practice for academic writing
  • collaborate with other participants to draft language structures including vocabulary strategies, syntax scaffolds, and discourse
