Digital Safety for Neurodivergent Kids: Practical Tools and Support Strategies

In today’s digital world, technology can be both a powerful tool and a challenging space for neurodivergent children and teens. This interactive 2-hour session will bring together parents, caregivers, teachers, and professionals to explore the unique opportunities and risks of digital life for students with autism, ADHD, and other learning differences.

Together, we will:

  • Examine digital safety concerns such as cyberbullying, online toxicity, and over-reliance on screens.
  • Understand the sensory, social, and emotional challenges that digital environments can create—and how to address them.
  • Discover how digital platforms can provide creative outlets and meaningful social connections for neurodivergent youth.
  • Discuss practical ways to balance technology use, including built-in device tools (timers, app limits, codes, shutdown warnings) to support healthy habits.
  • Share strategies for parents, caregivers, and educators to guide digital use in supportive and empowering ways.

Participants will leave with real-world tools, conversation starters, and resources they can use immediately to help neurodivergent students thrive in a digital age.

*A workshop for parents, caregivers, community agency members, and school staff.

**This workshop meets one of the requirements for VC SELPA in Module VIII of the instructional methodology of our Autism Certification (Para) process.

En el mundo digital de hoy, la tecnología puede ser tanto una herramienta poderosa al igual que un espacio desafiante para los niños y adolescentes neurodivergentes. Esta sesión interactiva de 2 horas reunirá a padres, cuidadores, profesores y profesionales para explorar las oportunidades y riesgos únicos de la vida digital para estudiantes con autismo, ADHD y otras diferencias de aprendizaje.

Juntos podremos:

  • Examinar los problemas de seguridad digital, como el cyberbullying, la toxicidad digital y la dependencia excesiva de las pantallas.
  • Entender los retos sensoriales, sociales y emocionales que pueden crear los entornos digitales y cómo abordarlos.
  • Descubrir cómo las plataformas digitales pueden proporcionar salidas creativas y conexiones sociales significativas para los jóvenes neurodivergentes.

FCCB Serving Children with Disabilities or Delays and their Families

This workshop provides family child care providers with practical tools and inclusive strategies to support children with disabilities or developmental delays, as well as their families. Through real-life examples and interactive activities, we will explore how to create a learning environment that is accessible, respectful, and enriching in the family child care setting.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify early signs of potential developmental delays.
  • Implement adaptations and supports that encourage the participation of all children.
  • Collaborate effectively with families and support professionals.
  • Foster an inclusive community where every child feels valued and capable of learning.
This training is designed to strengthen the ability of family child care providers to respond with sensitivity, respect, and professionalism to the diverse needs of children and their families.

Everyone who is certified in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCPI) MUST attend a 3.5 hour refresher every 12 months in order to keep the certification active.  This is critical to maintain your skills and also very important for liability reasons.

Dress Code:  Wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes.  No open toed shoes or sandals or you will NOT be allowed to participate. 

Please Be Prompt: Participants must be checked in prior to the 8am start time. Participants who arrive more than15 minutes after the training begins will NOT be admitted.
                                                                           

NOTE: The Ventura County SELPA is only authorized to certify employees of VC SELPA member school districts, charter schools, non-public schools, and approved contractors. We are not able to oversee the integrity of interventions provided by individuals who are not employed by these entities, nor can we ensure their participation in required annual refresher courses. For this reason, individuals who are not employed by a VC SELPA-affiliated agency are not eligible to attend this training.

Join us for a two-day Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, 2nd Edition (ADOS-2) Introductory Clinical Workshop on January 8–9, 2026. This hands-on training provides standardized instruction in administering, scoring, and interpreting the ADOS-2.

  • January 8 will cover Modules 3 and 4 (for individuals with fluent speech), and 
  • January 9 will focus on Modules 1 and 2 (for those with limited language).

Participants will engage in video observations, scoring discussions, and review of the measure’s psychometric properties and clinical use.

Participants will learn to:

  • Administer and score the ADOS-2
  • Apply ADOS-2 findings in clinical contexts
  • Understand its psychometric strengths and limitations

A workshop for school psychologists, speech language pathologists and occupational therapists.

The techniques you will learn will focus on preventing risk behavior and safely managing physical crisis.  Training in these techniques will be required in order to correctly utilize "Emergency Behavior Interventions" outlined in the SELPA plan in compliance with California Code of Regulations – Title certification.  

This is a blended training. Participants are required to complete an online portion prior to attending the in-person training. If the online portion is not completed, participant will NOT be admitted to the in-person training. Participants must complete BOTH the online and the in-person training and pass a written examination in order to receive certification.

NOTE: The Ventura County SELPA is only authorized to certify employees of the SELPA districts, charter schools, nonpublic schools and contractors.  We are not able to oversee the integrity of the interventions utilized by persons who are not our employees.

Youth Mental Health First Aid-Blended

Mental Health First Aid from National Council for Mental Wellbeing. 

Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

This year, our network’s learning, work, collaboration, and growth will be guided by the California ELA/ELD Framework and Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed.
