CLASS 2nd Edition Pre-K-3rd Observer 3-part Training

Event Date(s) 06/16/2026 - 06/18/2026

In this 3-part training, participants will:

  • Learn how to build an in-depth understanding of CLASS methodology
  • How to prepare to reliably asses teaching quality by focusing on the interaction's teachers have with their students
  • Feel prepared to take the reliability exam to become certified observers
Please note that this training is not public and will only be offered to CSPP agencies in the Kern County area.

ASPIRE funds are used to pay all associated participant fees for this Observer training ($900 value). Attendees must commit to attempting to pass certification testing within a 60-day window.

If you are unable to attend all sessions of a CLASS series: 

  • You may keep the provided materials and register for another offering of this event. Once registered, you must attend all parts of the offering (even if you have previously completed a portion of the training).
  • If you opt not to register for another offering, all materials must be returned to the ASPIRE Region C lead at sender's expense.

2nd Dual Language Immersion Institute - From Speech to Print

True Biliteracy requires more than just exposure; it requires intentional engineering of language opportunities. This session focuses on the "how" of integrating oracy into your daily literacy instruction. We will dissect the relationship between speaking and writing, examining how structured oral practice acts as a rehearsal for academic writing. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with peers to draft specific language structures—including vocabulary strategies, syntax scaffolds, and discourse collaborative structures—that elevate student output from simple sentences to complex academic arguments.

Participants will:

  • analyze the connection between speaking and writing
  • engage in strategies to structure oral practice for academic writing
  • collaborate with other participants to draft language structures including vocabulary strategies, syntax scaffolds, and discourse

Our sessions are grounded in asset-based pedagogies that honor the community cultural wealth of our multilingual communities.

Aligned with California’s vision for educational equity, we strive to ensure every classroom is equitable, inclusive, responsive, and supportive—environments where all students can thrive, expand their competencies, and access the widest range of postsecondary opportunities, ultimately as global citizens leading fulfilling and rewarding lives.
This year, our network’s learning, work, collaboration, and growth will be guided by the California ELA/ELD Framework and Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed.

AM. NCPI Refresher

Everyone who is certified in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCPI) MUST attend a 3.5 hour refresher every 12 months in order to keep the certification active.  This is critical to maintain your skills and also very important for liability reasons.

Dress Code:  Wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes.  No open toed shoes or sandals or you will NOT be allowed to participate. 

Please Be Prompt: Participants must be checked in prior to the 8am start time. Participants who arrive more than15 minutes after the training begins will NOT be admitted.
                                                                           

Please note: The Ventura County SELPA is only authorized to certify employees of VC SELPA member school districts, charter schools, non-public schools, and approved contractors. Individuals not employed by these entities are not eligible to attend this training, as we cannot verify the interventions they use or ensure participation in required annual refresher courses.

Collaborative Learning Sessions on Early Education in Expanded Learning

A series hosted by the Region 8 UPK/Expanded Learning Workgroup

Designed by the four-county UPK/Expanded Learning Workgroup, this professional development series offers early education content and context to help expanded learning programs deepen their understanding and strengthen their capacity to support young children.

These collaborative learning sessions are designed for expanded learning activity leaders, coordinators, directors, and program strategists who support or influence TK through 3rd grade programming. Using the 12 Quality Standards for Expanded Learning as a guiding framework, the sessions will feature content curated by the four-county UPK/EXL Workgroup. Each session will offer opportunities to ask questions, explore practical applications, and engage in meaningful group dialogue to deepen understanding and build capacity for serving young learners.

Session Format & Structure:
Each virtual gathering follows an interactive format designed to maximize participant engagement and knowledge sharing. Sessions will be recorded for future reference and to accommodate varying schedules across our regional partnership.

The structured format includes:

  • County Presentation Component: Early childhood specialists from the UPK/EXL Workgroup will present research-based strategies and highlight developmentally appropriate resources, tools, and approaches to support young learners in expanded learning environments.
  • Interactive Q&A: Following each presentation, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, engage in peer-to-peer learning, and reflect on how the content applies to their unique program contexts. The Region 8 Expanded Learning Technical Assistance Team will provide framing through the lens of the 12 Quality Standards for Expanded Learning.
  • Whole Group Discussion: A facilitated dialogue space for collective reflection and shared learning. Participants will engage in real-time conversations to explore connections across roles, identify common themes, and surface opportunities for growth within early childhood expanded learning.
Looking ahead, we hope to co-design future sessions in this series to include LEA best practice sharing and voices from the field. If you or someone from your team would like to share a story, strategy, or reflection from your TK–3 expanded learning efforts, we’d love to hear from you!

This series is designed to build capacity across our region to create high-quality, age-appropriate programming that complements and extends classroom learning. Delivered in a virtual format for broad accessibility, each session honors the collaborative spirit essential to strengthening early childhood education across our regional partnership.
