This workshop will focus on students of all ages functioning at the earliest levels of communication. It will help participants identify individual potential, develop meaningful interventions, and explore alternative access for those with complex communication needs.

Learner Outcomes:

  • Describe how educators and clinicians can work with beginning communicators to help them move toward intentional communication using symbols.
  • Summarize a research-based intervention strategy used with this population.
  • Identify three alternative access methods for students who use AAC.

This course is offeredfor a total of .3 ASHA CEUs (Professional, Introductory Level). To receive ASHA CEUs you must complete and submit the Learner Outcomes, Intent to Change form and fee at the conclusion of the workshop.

Expanded Learning Audit Training: Understanding Requirements, Roles, and Best Practices

Join us for an in-depth professional development session designed specifically for Expanded Learning staff, led by Juan Sanchez, former California Department of Education staff member. This workshop will focus on audit requirements and key Expanded Learning audit components, helping participants better understand what auditors look for and how to prepare with confidence.

Participants will receive a practical overview of the audit process, including staff roles, program and agency responsibilities, and requirements associated with California Education Code 41020, such as annual audits, auditor report components, and the appeals process. With over 25 years of experience in state and federal compliance and technical assistance, including Expanded Learning programs, Mr. Sanchez will share real-world insights, common audit findings, and best practices in an engaging and interactive learning environment.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Youth Mental Health First Aid consists of 2-hours of self-paced content followed by 5.5 hours of instructor-led training.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is an early intervention public education program. It teaches adults how to recognize the signs and symptoms that suggest a potential mental health challenge, how to listen nonjudgmentally and give reassurance to a youth who may be experiencing a mental health challenge, and how to refer a person to appropriate professional support and services.

Mental Health First Aid was created in Australia in 2000 by Betty Kitchener, an educator and mental health consumer, and Professor Tony Jorm, a mental health researcher. In 2008, the National Council, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and the Missouri Department of Mental Health brought Mental Health First Aid to the United States.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose of Youth Mental Health First Aid and the role of the Youth Mental Health First Aider.
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact youth.
  • Explain the impact of traumatic experiences and the role of resilience on adolescent development.
  • Apply the appropriate steps of the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to non-crisis situations.
  • Apply the appropriate steps of the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to crisis situations.
  • Choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of Youth Mental Health First Aid in a crisis or non-crisis situation.

Paths to Connection: An Outdoor Learning & Family Engagement Series

Paths to Connection: An Outdoor Learning & Family Engagement Series is a professional learning experience designed for Expanded Learning staff and program leaders across Region 8. This series supports participants in strengthening Expanded Learning programming through outdoor education, mindfulness, social-emotional learning, and family engagement practices.

Through guided outdoor learning experiences, facilitated dialogue, and shared reflection, participants will explore practical strategies and insights for creating inclusive, culturally responsive environments that foster connection among students, families, staff, and community partners. The series includes in-person hikes at the Wind Wolves Preserve in Kern County, modeling how outdoor spaces can be used to promote well-being, relationship-building, and meaningful family engagement.

The series culminates in a community-centered outdoor experience that brings together multiple stakeholders to reflect on learning, celebrate growth, and identify ways to sustain outdoor and family engagement practices beyond the series.

This workshop provides a high-level overview of attendance requirements for ASES, 21st CCLC, and ASSETs programs and explores how attendance data connects to funding, compliance, and continuous quality improvement (CQI).

Participants will review foundational grant expectations, gain shared context using state guidance, and be introduced to the ASAP Connect Attendance Tracker as a practical tool to support accurate tracking, goal-setting, and ongoing reflection. The session will focus on helping programs understand why attendance matters—not just how to report it—and how data can be used to support program sustainability and informed decision-making.

This is an overview session designed to build shared understanding across roles. It is not intended as a fiscal audit or advanced technical training.


Participants will:

  • Review core attendance expectations across ASES, 21st CCLC, and ASSETS grants

  • Understand how attendance data connects to funding and program sustainability

  • Explore how attendance tracking supports CQI efforts

  • Receive an overview of the ASAP Connect Attendance Tracker and its intended use

AM. NCPI Refresher

Everyone who is certified in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCPI) MUST attend a 3.5 hour refresher every 12 months in order to keep the certification active.  This is critical to maintain your skills and also very important for liability reasons.

Dress Code:  Wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes.  No open toed shoes or sandals or you will NOT be allowed to participate. 

Please Be Prompt: Participants must be checked in prior to the 8am start time. Participants who arrive more than15 minutes after the training begins will NOT be admitted.
                                                                           

Please note: The Ventura County SELPA is only authorized to certify employees of VC SELPA member school districts, charter schools, non-public schools, and approved contractors. Individuals not employed by these entities are not eligible to attend this training, as we cannot verify the interventions they use or ensure participation in required annual refresher courses.
